Dr. Tonya Welch
Dr. Welch started dancing at the age of 3 years old. She now holds a certficate in Ballet Teaching Studies with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and is one of a handful of sports doctors in Trinidad and Tobago. She currently works as a medical doctor at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the St. James Medical Complex, as well as the physician for TT Pro League teams Central FC, San Juan Jabloteh and the T&T National Senior Women's Team.
In 2000 she was awarded a full scholarship to attend an intensive course at the Ballet Hispanico in Manhattan, New York. From 2002-2005 she performed with the Metamorphosis Dance Company and during that time toured the UK performing contemporary dance. Whilst in Ireland, she taught beginners modern, jazz and ‘Caribbean dance’ at the college which she attended, choreographing and performing for annual dance shows. She also acted in the international production ‘Vagina Monologues’ in Ireland and was master of ceremonies for several events at her college, also holding certificates in radio and television broadcasting from Institute of Broadcasting Careers (IBC), T&T.
Tonya is also the founder of the DianaTon Foundation - an NGO geared at empowering women, youth and creating a support system for the differently-abled.
